This Web site is designed to give an access to the dissertation I wrote for obtaining
an MS in Prehistoric Archaeology (1997) at the University of Geneva.
Title and language
The original title of the dissertation is:
"Le matériel archéologique de Kitngipalak, île St.
Laurent, Alaska,
dans le contexte du Néoeskimo béringien"
which can be translated as.
"The Archaeological Material from Kitngipalak, St.
Lawrence Island, Alaska,
in the Context of the Beringian Neoeskimo".
It is proposed here in the original French version.
Dissertation's subject
The dissertation is a thorough analysis of the archaeological material gained
during the excavation of a stratigraphic profile dug in the largest settlement
mound of the Kitngipalak site (often referred to as Kitnepaluk). the site
is located on the western coast of St. Lawrence Island, Bering Sea, Alaska. The
excavation of Kitngipalak-Trench K2 occured in 1973, as an integrated part of
the St. Lawrence Island Archaeological Field Project led by Prof. Dr.
Hans-Georg Bandi (Bern, Switzerland) between 1967 and 1974.
Publication
My MS dissertation remains unpublished, but I plan to reevaluate all datasets
obtained from settlement excavations of Prof. Bandi's project, in order to
integrate them into an additional monograph to be published in English in
Bandi's monograph series entitled "St. Lorenz Insel Studien"
(collection Academica helvetica 5, Bern and Stuttgart: Verlag Paul Haupt).
Thanks
I would like to thank all scholars, institutions, family and friends who supported
me during the
realization of this dissertation.
